What is a DOT inspection?
A federal requirement issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation, a DOT inspection is meant to ensure the safety and good working order of commercial diesel vehicles. Both your truck and yourself as the driver are assessed to ensure that you can operate safely on the road. Although it can be issued by state troopers, it’s highly recommended to schedule a DOT inspection with your local certified mechanic like Mac’s Diesel & Trailer Repair.
What to expect during a DOT inspection
Whether it’s performed by Mac’s Diesel & Trailer Repair or your local certified mechanic, there are several things to expect with a DOT inspection. Firstly, there are six types of DOT inspection that cover yourself and your truck. These range from full complete inspections to focusing solely on your truck or you or one specific part of your truck and trailer; the sixth type is rare, as it only occurs if you’re hauling radiological or biological matter.
Once the inspection is complete and you’ve passed, then you will be given a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) decal to show you’ve passed your inspection. This is good for three months before it needs to be renewed.
If any violations are found, one of two outcomes can occur. If they aren’t serious, then you’ll still get the decal but your Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) scores could be impacted. The violation must also be addressed within fifteen days of the inspection, with a report sent to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) upon repair completion. If serious violations are found, however, then your vehicle can’t resume operation until the violations have been addressed and corrected.
